Psyllium (Plantago ovata), alsko known as Indian Plantago, is a plant valued for the fibre in its seeds. When in contact with water, the seed husks swell and form a gel-like substance.
Psyllium husk is a completely natural source of fibre. Its fibre is hard to digest, lingering longer in the digestive tract, stimulating intestinal nerve endings, and promoting peristalsis.
Usage: Mix 1–2 teaspoons (2.5–5 g) of Indian psyllium husk in a cup (at least 250 ml) of water, juice, tea, or add to yogurt, porridge, soups, or muesli. It can be left to swell for a few minutes. Make sure to drink enough fluids after consumption. It is recommended to consume at least 30 minutes before each meal.
Recommended daily dose: The maximum daily dose is 5 teaspoons (12.5 g).
Indian psyllium husk should be consumed at least 1 hour apart from taking medication or dietary supplements.
Tip: When in contact with water, the fibre swells and forms a gel-like substance, which can also be used to thicken food (raw desserts – an excellent solution).
