Diatomaceous earth is a natural sedimentary rock formed from the fossilised remains of diatoms, single-celled algae with siliceous skeletons. These diatoms contain silicon in their cell walls, and their remains settle at the bottom of lakes, rivers, and oceans.
Over time, these fossilised remains create a layer called diatomite, which appears in dried regions as a fine, white to light grey siliceous sediment.
Composed of micropores with a strong negative charge, diatomaceous earth can effectively trap water, oils, impurities, or metals.
