Chaga also known as Birch Fungus (Inonotus obliquus) is a special mushroom that mainly grows on birch trees in cold, northern climates, where winters are long and temperatures often drop below freezing - for example, in northern Europe, Russia, Scandinavia, Canada, and Alaska.
To grow, it requires a living tree, as it acts as a parasite – gradually penetrating the trunk and feeding on the tree’s sap. It is precisely because of the extreme conditions in which it thrives that Chaga develops a dense, black crust that protects it from frost, UV radiation, and other environmental stressors.
Chaga also grows very slowly, sometimes taking more than 10 years to mature, allowing it to gradually accumulate complex compounds from the tree’s sap. This slow growth and exposure to extreme conditions are key to its resilience and its rich content of bioactive compounds.
For centuries, Chaga has played an important role in the traditional cultures of Siberia and northern China, where it was consumed as a natural beverage and incorporated into daily rituals to support vitality and balance in the body.
Interesting fact: Chaga was historically called “birch charcoal,” as its hard crust resembles charred bark, and it was often used as a substitute for coffee or black tea.
With its naturally mild flavour, it makes an excellent addition to the daily diet, helping to support the body throughout the year.
This mushroom can be found on the market in many forms, such as capsules, powder, and liquid, where everyone can find the form that suits them best.
