Due to its rarity and value, the use of cordyceps in the past was mainly limited to emperors, nobility, and other wealthy individuals. Today, this mushroom is even rarer in nature, so its price can reach up to €28,000 per kilogram.

Cordyceps is also extremely interesting because of its unusual life cycle, which sets it apart from most other fungi. It is a parasitic fungus that infects larvae or adult specimens of certain insect species, most commonly butterfly caterpillars, sometimes ants or spiders. When the fungus spores come into contact with a host (e.g., a caterpillar living underground), they begin to germinate and penetrate its body.

The fungus then slowly grows inside the insect, feeds on it, and eventually completely takes over its organism. When the insect dies, a fruiting body grows from its body. This phenomenon is fascinating for scientists, as it demonstrates the incredible adaptation of this fungus to life in symbiosis.

This extremely interesting mushroom is often used in Chinese and Tibetan cuisine, where it is added to soups, teas, tonics, and various drinks.
