DMSO, or dimethyl sulfoxide, is an organic sulphur compound with the chemical formula C₂H₆OS. It is produced as a by-product of the wood industry and has been used for many years as a universal, multipurpose solvent.

It occurs in both liquid and solid (crystalline) states, with the freezing point depending on its purity. DMSO with 99.9% purity has a higher freezing point (around 18°C), meaning it transitions from liquid to solid at or just below room temperature.

DMSO in liquid form is absorbed extremely quickly. This is further aided by the fact that it becomes diluted upon exposure to air.
