Lugol's solution, also known as Lugol's iodine, is an aqueous solution of iodine and potassium iodide. This product is intended exclusively as a raw material and is not intended for consumption.

The solution has been known for many years. In 1829, it was studied by French physician Jean Guillaume Auguste Lugol, after whom it was named. He found that the addition of potassium iodide increases the solubility of iodine in water, which is why the characteristic ratio of iodine to potassium iodide is 1:2.
