Vitamin D3 plays multiple roles in the body, going beyond just keeping bones healthy and strong. Most cells have receptors for vitamin D3 – special “docking points” where this vital vitamin binds to perform its functions. It contributes to normal absorption/utilisation of calcium and phosphorus, normal blood calcium levels, the maintenance of normal teeth, and the maintenance of normal muscle function. It also has a role in the process of cell division and contributes to the normal function of the immune system.
This key fat-soluble vitamin comes in two forms: cholecalciferol (produced in the skin or sourced from food) or ergocalciferol (found in yeasts and mushrooms). The body converts either into vitamin D3.
Vitamin D production depends on skin exposure to sunlight. After winter or when spending most time indoors, ensuring enough vitamin D is crucial. Foods rich in vitamin D include fish oil, fish, eggs, and more.
